About Home and Rental Insurance
Homeowners insurance typically covers four main areas: your dwelling, your personal property, loss of use, and liability protection.
Your dwelling is the physical structure of your home. This may include the roof, walls, floors, ceilings, HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical wiring, foundation, windows, and doors. Home insurance will typically cover damage to these items caused by fire, lightning, windstorms, hail, falling objects, explosions, smoke, vandalism, theft, or water damage (from a leak or overflow). It is important to note that coverage for flooding or earthquakes is typically not included in standard home insurance policies and must be purchased separately.
Your personal property is everything in your home unit that is not attached to the dwelling. This includes furniture, clothing, appliances, electronics, and other items. Home insurance will typically cover damage to your personal property caused by fire, lightning, windstorms, hail, explosions, smoke vandalism, smoke, theft, or water damage (from a leak or overflow). If you have particularly valuable items in your home (e.g., jewelry, art, etc.), you may want to consider purchasing additional coverage for those items so that they are fully protected. Most rental insurance policies also cover personal property.
Loss of use coverage comes into play if you are forced to vacate your home due to a covered loss. This coverage will help to pay for additional living expenses (e.g., hotel stays, meals, etc.) incurred as a result of the covered loss.
Liability protection provides coverage if you are sued for bodily injury or property damage that you have caused to another person (e.g., if someone slips and falls in your home). This protection also extends to certain situations when you are away from home (e.g., if your dog bites someone while you are out on a walk).
Home and rental insurance policies can help protect you financially in the event of a loss. Whether you own or rent your home, our team can help you find the perfect policy for you.
